This Friday, July 11 brought us another winner. Bright clear skies, fluffy clouds, cool temperatures and smooth roads. We say farewell to Alexander Bay, NY and the 1000 Islands, regretting the limited time and no opportunity to take any of the excursion boats to see the millionaires homes of the New York City aristocracy. But off, we must. With a four hour drive to Lake Placid, NY
We drove through Fort Drum Army base, a huge expanse of military complex buildings, training sites and equipment.
Across some large mountain streams of the Adirondacks
An occasional opportunity to stop and smell the pine forests of Adirondack Park
with green forested slopes that wrap around the highway "like a shawl" according to the AAA tourbook.
Lot's of very smooth roads
and some wildlife too.
There was quite a bit of vacation traffic, with camper vans and sightseers too. Everyone was quite patient with our caravan which had grown to 8 cars by the time we arrived at Saranac Lake.
Saranac Lake is surrounded by stunning mountains and crystal waters. The lake area was a major tuberculosis treatment center during the late 1800's and early 1900's. Now, the mountains and lakes make it a popular vacation site.
We arrived at Woodlake Inn about one and the guys set about making a refreshment outpost for the Crawlers.
Then off to lunch in downtown Lake Placid. This upstairs patio overlooking Mirror Lake was very nice.
After lunch some of the gals headed to the Laundromat to replenish the suitcases.
and even Reg, who is traveling solo this trip.
Downtown, in keeping with the Olympics' of 1932 and 1980 held in Lake Placid, this model bob sled was modeled by our own Missy McKenna.
And Andy Leo found some real snow. Even in July.
We stay over tomorrow in Lake Placid to sightsee and play. See you then.
