Sunday, July 13, rain predicted. And a wonderful stay in Lake Placid. Yesterday some went bob sledding, some took the cable car to the near summit of Whiteface Mountain, both historic locations. Some did both. Others just toured the Lake Placid community.
Al Marsh, team curmudgeon, went up the mountain in his car and drove the Veterans Memorial drive to the summit... a 5 1/2 mile long very rough and stony road.
At the top is a castle which you can drive through.
and the views are spectacular.
You may remember the German family we befriended in Watkins Glen, who are touring the US. We happened upon them in Lake Placid... and this photo shows the Buckleys with Mom, Dan and children Lukas and Sinah.
Early morning at the Woodlake Inn. Notice how neatly the Morgans parked, but there is always one, err, unreasonable person who bucks the system. He was part of the group that partied until 3am and kept some of us awake half the night. We hate to leave Lake Placid, but we are very happy to leave the Woodlake Inn. Rate is a minus 3 diamond facility.
A quick breakfast at the New Leaf Coffee House, with great food and coffee and very personal service.
Then off we drove into the mountain passes and curvy roads.... great Morgan driving, indeed.
About 40 miles east of Lake Placid we found the Ausable Chasm, on the Ausable river, which we had been following all the way since this morning.
An outstanding view toward the east from the bridge over the chasm.
And to the west.
Reg might even be awestruck.
One of the day's highlights is the ferry across Lake Champlain, from Port Kent to Burlington. We made special effort to get to the ferry on time for the 9:30 passage.
Our cars cued up to board the one hour voyage.
Waiting for the ferry to arrive.
And waiting some more. Did I say we got there an hour before boarding.
'twas a chilly morning. Missy and Beth enjoying the cool.
Finally it arrives on time and ready. All loaded except the Morgans, when they found out the ramp was too steep to accommodate our low slung cars. We would have to wait another hour and a half for the next, and larger ferry.
Most of us decided another hour and a half was too much standing around, so we got refunds and decided to drive around the lake, north to Champlain, then east to Newport.
Al Marsh and Joe Topinka decided to wait it out for the 11 am ferry. On board Al met this lovely lass from Cornell University, an art student, who face painted a wildebeest on Al's mug.
Once to Derby Center, just outside of Newport we checked into our hotel for the night. Reg, Andy and Bruce dug into Bruce's 1960 Morgan, that was exhibiting fuel starvation going up the mountain roads.
They found what could be the culprit, a fuel line connection too close to hot parts causing vapor to form in the fuel line. Some plumbing work and it looks like the problem is solved. We will know tomorrow.
Pizza party tonight at the hotel... then off to Canada and Quebec City tomorrow. Aye?
